Adorable New Trend Sees Owners Give Their Cats Delicate Eggs To Hold And Protect

My cat is no gentle furball. I've watched her randomly and ruthlessly destroy many cardboard boxes, brand new toys, and innocent house plants, just to name a few of her past casualties.

So when I heard there was this new viral trend going around online where people use an egg to show off their own furry feline being a sweet, and protective creature, I was definitely doubtful.

Of course, then I spent an hour watching as many of this videos as I possibly could. And in the timeless words of Smash Mouth, "Now I'm a believer."

Wait, what exactly does an egg have to do with a cat, you ask?

Well, as first reported by Buzzfeed, some people on the popular social app TikTok have figured out that if they give their kitty a single, fragile egg, they just might hold it and protect it, like they understand just how delicate that egg really is.

And no surprise, the resulting videos are pawsitively adorable.

The trend appears to have started with user @annafromtiktok, who shared a clip of her own cat with an egg on June 20.

In that video, she films herself gently placing an egg between the arms of her fluffy kitty while explaining, "Apparently if you give a cat an egg, they protect it because it's fragile."

After giving the mysterious object a cautious sniff, her cat begins to lick it, prompting her to understandably "aww" at the unbelievable cuteness.

At nearly a million views, that video seems to have ignited a viral trend, and now even more users are giving their kitties an egg as well.

In another video posted by @tracyjorgensen, their cat initially seems confused when presented with an egg on its bed. Then, incredibly, it actually curls itself around the egg, wrapping it a furry cocoon of protection.

Guys, my heart simply can't take all this.

This kitty decided the best way to protect the egg was to make sure it was nice and toasty inside a fleece blanket.

No, really. I encourage you to watch the video for yourself so you can witness the moment this house cat begins pawing at a throw blanket until it has sufficiently covered the delicate egg in its warmth.

Oh, and every so often the cat pauses to check and make sure the egg is O.K. before continuing its pursuit of sufficient coverage.

Some cats were a bit more curious than protective right off the bat.

Like this fella, who spent a good while sniffing the egg. But although its cushioning instincts didn't take over right away, the cat is still noticeably gentle with the egg as it carefully paws the foreign object closer to its face for further inspection.

Of course, a few videos also proved that indeed, not all cats are alike, and some don't appreciate the presence of a random egg so much.

In this video, the kitty in question takes one look at the egg and immediately knocks it onto the ground without so much as a sniff.

"I expected nothing less," its owner wrote in the caption.

But for the most part, it seems the cats of TikTok are incredibly gentle creatures, at least when it comes to eggs.

And they're not alone! An earlier trend, perhaps one which inspired the cat version, saw people hand their golden retrievers an egg to hold in their mouth.

Dubbed the "Golden Retriever Challenge", many Twitter users began sharing adorable videos of their own sunny pups carefully holding an egg in their mouths without breaking it.

Maybe this is one of those supremely rare cases where we can hesitantly say that perhaps cats and dogs aren't so different after all?
