Next Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare First To Have PS4, XBox One And PC Cross-Play

Gamers — particularly first person shooter fans — are pretty hyped about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which will be released by Activision later this year. It turns out this shooter has a feature that could be a game-changer.

It's one of the biggest names in online shooters.

Along with EA's Battlefield series, Call of Duty has been pumping out games for pretty much every console on the market since the original Call of Duty was released all the way back in 2003.

The game will have an incredible feature.

Finally, a big, AAA online game will feature cross-play, confirmed by Activision. This means that gamers on all platforms — PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC — can participate in the same matches.

Why's this such a big deal?

For gamers who don't want to drop thousands of dollars on the equipment and subscriptions, it's necessary to choose a system. Apart from a few exclusives, they all play the same games.

It's been a frustrating situation for gamers.

Any PS4 owner whose friends are on Xbox, or vice versa, understands the pain. When the games play identically across different systems, why can't everyone just all play at the same time?

From the dawn of video games, manufacturers have competed with one another in the gaming market. Whether it's Atari vs. Intellivision, SNES vs. Genesis or PS1 vs. N64, this dynamic has always existed.

Sony's been resistant to cross-play.

Xbox and PC gamers can play together with many games, largely because both Windows and Xbox are Microsoft entities. But Sony has long been the odd company out, hesitant to play nice with Microsoft.

The new CoD could change things.

We've seen limited cross-play in the past, but generally with smaller or indie games. Activision's release is sure to be a blockbuster — and it could be a sign of changes to come.

So what else is in the game?

CoD: Modern Warfare shares its name with other entries in the series, and this is no accident. The Modern Warfare games have been enormously popular, and the new game serves as a "soft reboot" of the series.

A new trailer dropped today.

It features impressive graphics and plenty of that shooty FPS goodness. But really, the big news here remains the fact that gamers will be able to play with their friends, regardless of the platform.

There's more good news.

While microtransactions are sure to be a factor, the new game won't have a traditional season pass. This is great news for gamers who've become sick of paying way more just to get all of the maps or content.

It's set for an October 25 release.

Delays can't be ruled out, but companies generally make every effort to get these AAA pre-holiday releases out on time. No new Battlefield games are set for release, meaning CoD won't have a ton of competition around release time.

What do you think?

Shooters aren't for everyone, but it's great to see manufacturers allowing more cross-play. Be sure to check out Activision's latest trailer below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
