Liam Hemsworth Officially Files For Divorce From Miley Cyrus

It was a low-key event that the public only learned about through Instagram stories. Despite being together for almost a decade, the marriage only lasted eight months.

In a statement, they said, "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers."

He wrote, "Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward."

The use of the word "separation" had some fans hoping for a reconciliation somewhere down the line for the longtime couple.

Miley and Liam have had a rocky history. They initially started dating all the way back in 2009, during the filming of the movie The Last Song. They got engaged in 2012.

Miley was rumored to be seeing model Stella Maxwell during their split, and came out with the heart-wrenching breakup anthem ‘Wrecking Ball.’

The couple was constantly sharing loved up photos on their social media pages, usually accompanied by a sweet and sappy message. Liam often called Miley his ‘angel.’

Their sources say that Liam filed in LA, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. TMZ reports that there was prenup in place, so the split should be fairly simple.

Miley also just released a song "Slide Away" that seems to be about her split from Liam, singing that she doesn't want "the whiskey and pills," alluding to rumors that Liam's drug and alcohol use contributed to the split, which sources from Liam's team have strongly denied.

In an interview with Elle Miley said, "My relationship is unique. And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it. I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a [expletive] apron cooking dinner?"

"People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still [expletive] good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word," she said.

Some fans felt that her reluctance to use the word "wife" was a sign that their marriage was not going to last.

Liam was photographed without his while surfing with his brother Chris, while Miley shared these FOMO-inducing vacation shots on her Instagram not wearing hers.

When the photographs were released of Miley making out with Kaitlynn Carter, all eyes were turned to Carter's own famous ex, The Hills star (and half-brother to the Kardashian family) Brody Jenner.

It looked like Miley didn't think it was so funny, though, because she commented back saying "Go take a nap in your truck and cool off #HotGirlSummer."

One news outlet claimed Liam had told them that "You don't know what it's like," when asked about the separation, and that he had added, "I don't want to talk about it."

Liam took to his own Instagram to deny this claim, saying that all quotes attributed to him were fale.
